Back by Popular Demand

Once again, I apologize for waiting so long to write another post. I'm a terrible blogger, it seems. I know, there are people who post three or four times every day. This is not me: my computer and I don't always have the best working relationship. (I am a firm believer in "Resistentialism"; that is, that inanimate objects intentionally demonstrate a hostile attitude toward humans. At least, toward me.)

At present, my computer has decided that it has lost it's will to live: it randomly stops charging for no reason whatsoever. My internet connection here is decidedly temperamental. I'm focusing on schoolwork (or I should be), since I have two major essays due this term with a grand total of at least 9000 words. But honestly, these aren't really good excuses.

And now, without further ado, more pictures from Germany.

Out for a walk:

One of the Christmas Markets I went to....

Me with Baldur.... Whose nose do you think is longer?

At a German dairy farm.... The cows thought my camera was the coolest thing EVER.

I drove a tractor. Yes, I did. This one.

Another walk, more incredible scenery.

Guess what I got to do on Christmas day?

Just a random addition: on one of our outings, we saw some "Modern art."

The first one is called "Fallen Knights." In the second one... are you ready for this?... the trees are wearing clothes. No, I'm not making this up.
Modern art... I just don't get it....

Okay, that's all for now! I have a few more photos from Germany to post later on, and then on to my week in Norway!

Mein Weihnachten in Deutschland

The First Installment of my Christmas and New Year's Adventures.

(I highly recommend reading this post in it's original format on Blogspot at CreativeCliche, as the formatting does not carry over when it is imported to other sites.)

I'm very sorry for the delay in posting my holiday pictures: several factors have contributed to delaying this post.
As I was a little trigger-happy with my camera, I have over 500 pictures from my holidays abroad. Yes, I know. But, as the song goes, "You would have done the same!" In any case, the first installment is just my first couple of days in Germany.

Anja, Me, and Anja before boarding the plane in Aberdeen. COLD!
We were just a bit bored in the queue to board the puddle-jumper from Aberdeen to Dublin, so Anja (the one on the right) got a quick photo.

We arrived in Frankfurt... late, and one of my hosts' friends picked us up at the airport and drove us to Göttingen, where we stayed for the next day and a half.

Me, in
Göttingen.

And it's kinda cold, too.

Gänseliesel-- the most kissed girl in the world.

Actually, she may be just that. It's tradition for postgraduate students to give this lovely lass a kiss on the day they receive their doctorate. I actually got to see this whilst I was there.

One of the lions guarding the Town Hall.

Isn't he a handsome lad?!

St. Johannis Church, as seen from atop St. Jacobi.

It was quite a hike to the top of St. Jacobi Church, but it was absolutely worth it. Such a stunning view of the city below, even if the ladders were scary. Still, it was quite amazing going up through four levels of bells. That's a lot of bells.
Sadly, I wasn't able to get a good picture of St. Jacobi, but I got a panoramic view of the city below!

People shopping at the Christmas Market below.

Everyone's trying to get their Christmas shopping done lickety-split. Some seem to be more successful than others.

I think this is St. Albani Church. Correct me if I'm wrong.

What a beautiful city. I was sorry to leave it the next day, but almost instantly forgot my regret when I arrived at Anja's home.

That's all folks!
(Dee da da dee dee DAH!)

Tune in to CreativeCliche next time for: Mandy's time with Anja's family. This includes baking cookies, decorating the tree, hiking, horses, a dairy farm, a tractor, and much much more.

Where's Wally-- errr, Mandy....

Hey everyone!

I'm terribly sorry that I haven't been updating this as much as I should be. I have a ton of excuses, not that any of them are any good....

I have a lot of things to post, including a lot of travel pics, and photos from around Aberdeen, but I'll start with my travels during the Winter Holidays. I hope to have my first post finished by Thursday, so check back!

Oh, and if you were wondering: the chap in the red and white striped shirt with the funny hat and the glasses....in the UK, he's called "Wally," but in the States, he's called "Waldo." In case you were wondering.

Cheers!

Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You...

The link that I posted yesterday is currently experiencing difficulties. It looks as though I will need to repost ALL of the images and change some of the coding used for my previous pictures page. I'm getting on this soon, and will let you know when it's up and running again. SORRY GUYS!

The new page, however, will be bigger and better. I will be including (with any luck, and weather permitting, that is) pictures of the beach here (which is stunning), and hopefully some images from the rest of town as well. I'm working on getting some pictures of Marischal College and other buildings around here. Until then, please enjoy this picture of the front of the Chapel at King's College. Tune in next time for some great pics!

Forty-Something Weeks to Go....

After a week in Scotland, I'm feeling much less disoriented than when I first arrived. This does not mean, however, that I am used to anything yet. I still can't remember which way to look first when crossing the street, I'm still not used to having two faucets on the sink (one to scald your left hand and the other to freeze off the fingers on your right), nor have I adjusted to the cost of living here. But neither have I lost the feeling of awe that comes with walking through Seaton Park and past St. Machar's Cathedral to the University every day. There's an almost magical aura in the very stones here, from the cobbled roads to the granite bricks the the great Crown atop the Court at the heart of the University itself. It's so amazing to see a place where both new and old have found harmony with one another: it seems so natural to see fifteenth century buildings among those of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The transition into daily life in Scotland has been challenging, although not impossible. My flatmates are truly a blessing-- they are very tolerant of my American-ness, and seem to be constantly delighted by the many Americanisms I have brought with me. I've learned that “bangs” are called “fringe” here, and that a “sweater” is called a “jumper,” but I don't think I'll ever adjust to saying “path” instead of “sidewalk”. They're two different things!

Be that as it may, I'm still learning so much here. I have five flatmates: two from Germany (and they are kind enough to attempt to teach me German), a girl from Norway (who is trying desperately to get me to pronounce SOMETHING correctly in Norwegian), a local girl from the other side of Aberdeen, and one from Newcastle from whom I am learning “proper” English....

I have experienced my first haggis with neeps and tatties. (If you don't know what that is, try it before you ask). And the verdict is...? I enjoyed it. Perhaps this is merely because I am an adventurous eater, but I will most certainly be ordering it again. There was something distinctly comforting about it, somewhat like the warm feeling that comes with eating beef pot-pie. Must be the Scottish in me.

After many days of hard labor, I have finally created a worthy display of pictures to show where I have been and what I have seen. I took all of these pictures while merely wandering around. The pictures presented themselves for the taking and posting, and that is what I have done.
